Very few genres have been more overplayed on the iPhone, and sadly, most of them just don’t stand up to par. Thankfully, though there are still the occasional gems to be found, including one of our more recent finds, Tanks and Turrets 2, by developer Gordon Roberts. The app brings a wealth of quality strategy and gameplay to the table, creating an atmosphere and title that we appreciated immensely, though Tanks and Turrets 2 may not be the most original app you play all year. For our full thoughts on this brand-new strategy game for the iPhone, check below beyond the break!
As stated, Tanks and Turrets 2 fits more or less directly into the much run category of tower defense. We suppose one could call the genre simply “Turrets” at this point, but either way, its the same basic concept we’ve seen elsewhere before: Enemies appear in waves, and follow a set course towards your home turf. To prevent this, players must put turrets of various flavors alongside the specified path. These weapons churn out bullets (or lightning bolts, flames, etc.) and either harm the baddies to the point of immobility, or fail to kill them off in time. All in all, it’s a fun concept, though one we’ve easily seen done about a hundred times elsewhere in the App Store.
The game has pretty impressive graphics. The app draws a lot of inspiration from other, gritty and war-time style applications, coming loaded to the gills with burnt-out levels and hard-edge sprites. We also appreciated the richness of the gameplay itself: you have six different lands to choose from. The best things about this new game is unlimited levels, six more maps and turret types than the previous one, almost 1000 trophies to earn.
At the end of the day, Tanks and Turrets 2 offers a lot of levels, an immense richness, and a solid if overplayed style of iPhone gaming. The price(Free) is a treat for everyone, specially if you’re a fan of the genre, you have hardly anything to lose by giving it a test-drive, save a solid afternoon playing it by the fire.
